This movie was one of my favourite films when it screened earlier this year at the French Film Festival. I got a lot of feedback from people who attended the festival saying they’d really enjoyed it as well. Now it’s just been released in cinemas around the country, and I think it is worth catching. The story starts in France’s top university, the Ecole Normale Superieur. Marguerite is a brilliant young mathematician, and the focus of her whole life has been studying for her thesis. Then a new student arrives at her university and finds a flaw in the thesis. Suddenly, Marguerite’s world falls apart around her. She’s deemed overly emotional by her professor, so she abruptly quits university and finds herself in the real world without really being equipped to deal with it. For the first time in her life, Marguerite must find work. She gets a job in a shoe shop, but immediately faces challenges. She has no idea how to interact with humans, let alone communicate with them. It’s fun watching her find her way in the real world, she has an adorable naivety and an addiction to logic that’s really amusing. This big, beautiful brain of hers inevitably brings her back to mathematics but she returns with a whole new perspective on what it means to be human. This movie is really all about life. Honestly, it’s hard not to fall in love with Marguerite, played so well by Ella Rumpf. It’s a gorgeous little movie — a slightly different coming-of-age story, if you like. ★★★★ NZ Herald
